Spring is officially here!

I don't know about you, but it felt like a long winter, so I'm sure you're looking forward to spending some time outside and enjoying the warm weather. We're still looking out at snow here in Muskoka, but it's almost time to get out there and soak up some sun and fresh air.

As the final piles of snow finally start to disappear, we're thinking about the things that need to be done before we can pull put the patio chairs and relax.

As usual, when the seasons change, we've put together a spring home maintenance checklist to make it easy - and so that you don't miss anything. These are things to do now, and in the coming weeks, to make the rest of the year easy.

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

As the snow melts and temperatures rise, it's time to inspect your home for any winter damage and prepare it for the warmer months. Here’s a comprehensive spring home maintenance checklist for Ontario homeowners:

Exterior Maintenance

  1. Inspect the Roof – Safely check for missing, loose, or damaged shingles and leaks. Many of us had to shovel after that first massive snowfall in December, so it's important to ensure the roof is still in good shape.

  2. Clean the Gutters and Downspouts – Remove debris to prevent blockages and ensure proper drainage.

  3. Examine the Foundation – Look for cracks or signs of shifting and address any issues early.

  4. Check Siding and Brickwork – Repair any damage to protect against moisture intrusion.

  5. Inspect Windows and Doors – Look for drafts, cracks, and damaged weatherstripping.

  6. Test Outdoor Faucets and Sprinklers – Ensure they are working properly and repair any leaks.

  7. Check the Driveway and Walkways – Repair cracks or uneven surfaces caused by frost.

  8. Inspect the Deck and Patio – Look for loose boards, nails, and signs of rot; clean and reseal if necessary.

  9. Clean and Inspect Outdoor Furniture – Wash and check for any needed repairs before use.

  10. Service the Air Conditioning Unit – Clean or replace filters and schedule a professional inspection if needed.

Interior Maintenance

  1. Check for Water Damage – Look for leaks, stains, or mold in the basement, attic, and ceilings.

  2. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors – Replace batteries and ensure they are functioning properly.

  3. Inspect and Clean the HVAC System – Change air filters and ensure vents are clear.

  4. Check Plumbing for Leaks – Look under sinks, around toilets, and at exposed pipes.

  5. Test the Sump Pump – Ensure it’s operating properly to prevent basement flooding.

  6. Inspect the Attic and Basement – Look for signs of pests, mould, or insulation issues.

This winter was one for the record books, so spend a little extra time making sure things are in tip-top shape as those last bits of snow melt away.
